micro1 Review 2026: Is micro1 Legit? Pay, the Zara AI Interview and Your Data

micro1 review 2026 header: $150/hr top posted rate, paid twice a month via Deel, 4.7 Trustpilot score

Is micro1 legit? Yes. micro1 is a San Francisco company that recruits experts to train AI models for labs including Microsoft and Amazon, pays contractors twice a month through Deel, and raised $35 million at a $500 million valuation in 2025. The questions people actually have are about the process: an AI interviewer called Zara that records you on video, what happens to that recording, and why passing the interview doesn’t always lead to work. This micro1 review answers all three.

Verdict in 20 seconds

micro1 is a real, fast-growing company with real paid projects, from $8 an hour for simple video tasks to $90–$150 for lawyers and quants. It is also a contractor gig: projects pause or end without warning, and many people who pass the interview wait a long time for work. Your interview video is kept and, once de-identified, can train micro1’s own models. Apply if you have a specialist skill, keep other income, and decide in advance how you feel about the data clause.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • micro1 raised a $35 million Series A at a $500 million valuation in September 2025 (TechCrunch).
  • The Zara interview records audio and video; AI scores it and a human reviews the result before a final decision (micro1 privacy notice).
  • micro1 may use de-identified interview audio, video and transcripts to train its own models, but says it does not share them with AI model companies (micro1).
  • Contractors are paid in USD twice a month through Deel (micro1 FAQ).
  • Listings we checked ran from $8 to $150 an hour, and the job board showed 278 open roles on October 24, 2026 (micro1 jobs).
  • Trustpilot: 4.7 from 10,998 reviews, though most describe the interview rather than paid work (Trustpilot).

1What is micro1, and who runs it?

micro1 was started by Ali Ansari, who built the first version of its AI recruiter while studying at UC Berkeley in 2022. It recruits professionals — lawyers, scientists, engineers, linguists — and places them on data-labeling, AI-training and evaluation projects for AI labs. TechCrunch described it in 2025 as “a competitor to Scale AI” and reported customers including Microsoft and several Fortune 100 companies (TechCrunch).

Growth has been steep. TechCrunch put its annual revenue run rate at about $50 million in September 2025, and Forbes reported in September 2026 that micro1 was generating over $500 million in annualized revenue and had raised more than $100 million at a $4 billion valuation — figures Forbes attributed to people familiar with the deal rather than to the company (Forbes). micro1’s privacy notice lists its address as 655 Montgomery St, San Francisco.

Not Mercor

micro1 is often mentioned in the same breath as Mercor, which suffered a data breach in 2026 and faces class actions. We found no lawsuit, data breach or regulatory action involving micro1 in reliable sources as of October 2026.

2The Zara AI interview: what to expect

Every applicant talks to Zara, micro1’s AI interviewer. According to micro1’s privacy notice, the session is recorded on audio and video, technical assessments also record your screen, and “the overall assessment will be reviewed by a human evaluator before a final decision is made” (micro1). micro1’s interview guide says you get “a real-time result” on whether you meet its certification criteria (micro1).

micro1 doesn’t publish an official length. Applicants on Reddit describe interviews of roughly 30 to 50 minutes (r/micro1_ai), and replies in the same community say a failed interview can be retaken after 30 days (r/micro1_ai). Treat both as community reports, not rules.

  • Prepare like a real interview: answer with specific examples from your own work in the field you applied for.
  • Use a quiet room and a working camera and microphone: the session is proctored and recorded.
  • Only trust official contact: micro1 says its emails come from @micro1.ai, @micro1.io or @micro1.co (micro1).

3Does micro1 use your interview to train AI?

Yes, its own models. This is the question applicants ask most, so here is what the policy says. micro1’s candidate privacy notice reserves the right “to use de-identified information collected from interviews, including audio, video, transcripts, and assessment results, to train and enhance our proprietary machine learning models.” In the same paragraph it adds that micro1 does “not share your data, de-identified or otherwise, with AI model companies for the purposes of training their models” (micro1).

Two caveats are worth knowing. The same notice says the use of de-identified information “is not subject to any restrictions under this Privacy Policy.” And the opt-out is blunt: to stop AI training on your information, you have to delete your account. If that trade-off doesn’t sit well with you, decide before you record the interview, not after.

4How much does micro1 pay in 2026?

Pay depends entirely on the role. These are listings we found on micro1’s job board in October 2026 (jobs.micro1.ai):

micro1’s contractor FAQ says payments are made “in USD on a bi-monthly basis (twice per month)” under a contract through Deel, and its support-program page promises payment “on a fixed, predictable schedule” (micro1 FAQ, micro1). Expect around 15–20 hours a week on an active project, according to the same FAQ. You’re a contractor, so taxes and benefits are on you.

Twice a month

is how often micro1 pays — slower than the weekly payouts at Mercor, Outlier or Handshake AI. Our guide to side hustles that pay daily compares payout speed across platforms.

5The main complaints about micro1

micro1’s ratings are high, but the complaints cluster around the same three things:

  • Passing the interview and then waiting. One Reddit user described an “endless interview loop with zero actual work” (r/micro1_ai). Certification means you’re eligible for projects, not that a project is waiting.
  • Rejection feedback that doesn’t make sense. Another applicant wrote that “the feedback makes 0 sense at all” after an automated rejection (r/micro1_ai).
  • Projects that pause or end suddenly. Glassdoor’s summary of reviews notes that projects pause or end suddenly, with gaps between tasks (Glassdoor), and contractors on Reddit say it’s “usually sudden and not in advance” (r/micro1_ai).

These are the same trade-offs we found at Alignerr, DataAnnotation and Handshake AI: real pay, no job security.

6What micro1 reviews say

micro1 scores 4.7 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 10,998 reviews (October 25, 2026). Read that number carefully. Trustpilot notes that micro1 invites people to leave reviews; many of them are written right after the Zara interview, so they rate the interview rather than months of paid work; and micro1 hasn’t replied to its negative reviews. Glassdoor is a better gauge of working there: 4.4 from 194 reviews, with 90% saying they’d recommend it.

7Is micro1 worth it?

Yes, if you have a skill micro1’s clients pay for — a license, an advanced degree, senior experience or a less common language — and you treat it as side income. The interview is free, the top rates are among the best in AI training, and the company is well funded. Go in knowing three things: your interview is recorded and kept, passing doesn’t guarantee work, and projects can stop overnight.

If you don’t have a specialist background, start with the beginner-friendly platforms in our guide to getting paid to train AI with no experience, such as Prolific.

micro1 FAQ

Is micro1 legit or a scam?

micro1 is legit. It is a San Francisco company that recruits experts for AI-training projects for labs including Microsoft and Amazon, and pays contractors twice a month through Deel. Complaints are about waiting for work after the interview and projects ending suddenly, not about fake jobs.

What is the micro1 Zara interview?

Zara is micro1’s AI interviewer. The session is recorded on audio and video, AI scores it, and a human reviews the assessment before a final decision. Applicants report interviews of roughly 30 to 50 minutes.

Does micro1 use my interview to train AI?

micro1’s privacy notice says it may use de-identified interview audio, video and transcripts to train its own models, and that it does not share your data with AI model companies to train their models. To opt out, you have to delete your account.

How does micro1 pay?

In US dollars, twice a month, under a contractor agreement through Deel. Rates on listings we checked ranged from $8 to $150 an hour depending on the role.

Why haven’t I gotten work after passing the micro1 interview?

Passing certifies you as eligible; it does not guarantee a project. Work depends on client demand for your skills, and contractors report waits and sudden project pauses.
