KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • → 5.6 million Active sellers on the Etsy marketplace at the end of 2025, selling to 86.5 million active buyers. (Etsy, Inc. Form 10-K for 2025, 2025)
  • → 24.2% Etsy's revenue take rate in 2025, its revenue as a share of everything sold, up from 22.3% in 2024. (Etsy, Inc. Form 10-K for 2025, 2025)
  • → 6.5% + 3% + $0.25 + $0.20 The US fee stack on every Etsy sale: a 6.5% transaction fee on price plus shipping, a 3% plus $0.25 payment processing fee, and a $0.20 listing fee. (Etsy Fees & Payments Policy, 2026)
  • → $3.30 Etsy's fees on a $25 item with $5 shipping, 13.2% of the item price, before any Offsite Ads charge; with a 15% Offsite Ads fee the total rises to $7.80, or 31.2%. (Etsy Fees & Payments Policy, 2026)
  • → 40% Share of Etsy's 2025 GMS that came from habitual buyers, who are only about 7% of active buyers. (Etsy, Inc. Form 10-K for 2025, 2025)
  • → 4% The decline in Etsy marketplace GMS in 2025, to $10.5 billion, while consolidated GMS including Depop and Reverb fell 5.3% to $11.9 billion. (Etsy, Inc. Form 10-K for 2025, 2025)

Every Etsy forum has the same question: is my shop failing, or is this normal? Etsy never answers it directly, because it does not publish sales per shop. It does publish everything needed to work the average out, in the annual report it files with US regulators, and almost nobody reads it. This page does, and turns it into the numbers a seller can compare against their own dashboard.

The headline is lower than most people expect. The average active Etsy seller sold $1,868 of goods in 2025, about $156 a month, when the marketplace's $10.46 billion of gross merchandise sales is divided across its 5.6 million active sellers. (Etsy, Inc. Form 10-K for 2025, 2025) That is an average pulled upward by the large shops, before fees, so a typical new shop sells less than that. It is also a figure the income screenshots never mention, because it would make most of them look exceptional rather than achievable.

The rest of the report is just as useful. It says how many buyers there are per seller, how spending is concentrated among a small group of habitual buyers, how much of every sale Etsy itself keeps, and how that share has been rising. Together with the current fee schedule, it is the closest thing to an honest baseline an Etsy or print-on-demand seller can get.

1 How Many Sellers and Buyers Does Etsy Have?

5.6 million active sellers and 86.5 million active buyers on the Etsy marketplace at the end of 2025, about 15.4 buyers for every seller, choosing from more than 100 million items. Counting Depop and Reverb, the company reports 8.76 million sellers and 93.5 million buyers. (Etsy, Inc. Form 10-K for 2025, 2025)

Etsy, Inc. Form 10-K for 2025, 2025

Two things in these counts matter for a seller. The first is the definition. An active seller is any shop that paid at least one fee in the past year, so the 5.6 million figure (Etsy, Inc. Form 10-K for 2025, 2025) includes shops that listed a handful of items and sold one. The second is the direction. The consolidated seller count grew (Etsy, Inc. Form 10-K for 2025, 2025) because Depop added sellers, while Etsy’s own report says marketplace sellers declined before stabilising mid-year and buyers slipped. More sellers chasing slightly fewer buyers is the competitive backdrop behind every post about slowing sales.

The buyer-to-seller ratio is the number to remember. With roughly fifteen buyers per shop and more than 100 million items (Etsy, Inc. Form 10-K for 2025, 2025) competing for them, a listing’s job is not to be good but to be found, which is why Etsy’s search, ads and Offsite Ads loom so large in seller forums. The same dynamic runs through the marketplaces in our reselling profit statistics, where eBay reports billions of live listings for a buyer base that grows in single digits.

2 How Much Does the Average Etsy Seller Sell?

$1,868 a year on average, from $10.46 billion of marketplace sales spread across the active sellers. Buyers averaged $121 across about 3 purchases, and habitual buyers, a small minority, produced 40% of sales. 74% of sales came from US buyers and 85% from the six largest categories. (Etsy, Inc. The average is the best number public data allows, and its limits should be stated plainly. It is a mean, not a median, and marketplace sales follow the usual long tail: a few thousand large shops sell a large share of the total, and millions of small ones sell a few items. Etsy does not publish the distribution, so a median cannot be calculated, but every seller survey and forum thread points the same way: the typical shop sells well under the average. The Reddit threads behind this article include a seller averaging a few hundred dollars a month from digital products after fourteen months, and others reporting a couple of sales a year from forty listings.

The buyer side explains why. The average buyer spends $121 a year over about 3 purchase days (Etsy, Inc. Form 10-K for 2025, 2025), and 40% of all sales come from habitual buyers who are only a small fraction of the base (Etsy, Inc. Form 10-K for 2025, 2025). A shop that reaches those repeat buyers can do very well; a shop that relies on one-time gift purchases is sharing a modest annual spend with fourteen other sellers. This is the same concentration that our passive income statistics find in dividends and rents: the average hides a small group that earns most of the money.

3 What Are Etsy's Seller Fees in 2026, and What Do They Cost on a Real Sale?

A $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on price plus shipping, and 3% + $0.25 payment processing for US sellers. On a $25 item with $5 shipping that is $3.30; with a 15% Offsite Ads charge it becomes $7.80. A $5 digital download loses $0.93. (Etsy Fees & Payments Policy, 2026)

Etsy’s fees are individually small and collectively large. The transaction fee applies to shipping as well as the item (Etsy Fees & Payments Policy, 2026), so charging for postage does not escape it, and the payment processing fee has a fixed component that weighs on cheap items (Etsy Help: What are Payment Processing Fees for Selling on Etsy?, 2026). On its own the stack takes about an eighth of a typical sale, which is in line with eBay and well below Poshmark; the comparison across all three is in our reselling profit statistics.

Offsite Ads are the fee sellers argue about, because they are not optional below the threshold and they are large. A shop under $10,000 of annual sales pays 15% on any order Etsy attributes to one of its external ads (Etsy Fees & Payments Policy, 2026), which more than doubles the cost of that sale. Above the threshold the rate falls and the programme can be left. For digital products the picture is different: there is no shipping and no stock, but the fixed fees take a bigger bite of a five-dollar download (Etsy Fees & Payments Policy, 2026), which is why successful digital sellers price higher or bundle. Hidden and shifting fees are a pattern across the platforms we review, from ClickBank to the payment processors in our invoice software comparison.

4 How Much of Every Sale Does Etsy Keep?

24.2% in 2025, up from 22.3% the year before. Revenue rose to $2.88 billion even though consolidated sales fell to $11.92 billion, because services revenue from ads and shipping labels grew to $876 million while fee revenue was flat. 45% of sales now run through the app. (Etsy, Inc. Etsy, Inc. Form 10-K for 2025, 2025

The take rate is the single most important number for a seller’s long-run margin, and it is moving the wrong way for sellers. A rate of 24.2% means that for every hundred dollars buyers spend, Etsy books about twenty-four as its own revenue (Etsy, Inc. Form 10-K for 2025, 2025). Not all of that comes from the seller: a share is paid by buyers through shipping labels and some is advertising that sellers choose. But the direction is clear, and the report itself explains it: marketplace fee revenue was flat while services revenue, mostly advertising and labels, rose by double digits (Etsy, Inc. Form 10-K for 2025, 2025).

Put differently, Etsy grew its revenue in a year when its sales shrank by charging more per dollar of sales. That is the same strategy eBay’s annual report describes, and it has the same consequence: a growing share of a shop’s income goes to being visible rather than to the product. Sellers who treat Etsy Ads and Offsite Ads as optional extras tend to find, when they total a year, that visibility was their biggest cost after materials. Our review method counts that cost against every platform’s advertised rate for exactly this reason. The service marketplaces show the same pattern from the other side: our Fiverr review traces how fees on both buyer and seller have crept up while the headline commission stayed put.

5 Who Buys on Etsy, and Why Does It Matter for Sellers?

17% of US adults shopped on Etsy in 2025, far more women than men. Habitual buyers are 7% of active buyers but spend about $691 each a year, while 26% of sales come from outside the United States. (Etsy, Inc. Form 10-K for 2025, 2025)

What the average habitual buyer spends on Etsy in a year, against an average buyer’s spend of about a hundred and twenty dollars.
Etsy, Inc. Form 10-K for 2025, 2025

Etsy’s buyer base is wide and shallow. Nearly a fifth of American adults bought something in 2025 (Etsy, Inc. Form 10-K for 2025, 2025), but the average buyer spent $121 across three occasions, which fits the gift and occasion purchases the report says drive the marketplace. The money is in the narrow group that comes back: habitual buyers spend around $691 a year (Etsy, Inc. Form 10-K for 2025, 2025), more than five times the average, and Etsy’s own stated priority is to move more buyers into that group.

For a seller the implication is practical. A shop built for one-time gift traffic competes for a slice of a modest annual spend against fourteen other sellers; a shop that earns repeat buyers in a category people restock, such as craft supplies or paper goods, is fishing in the pool that produces forty percent of the market’s sales. The international share of 26% (Etsy, Inc. Form 10-K for 2025, 2025) is the other underused lever, since most small shops never enable it. None of this changes the average in the second section, but it does explain which shops sit above it. The same selection effect decides earnings on the research platforms in our survey and user testing pay data, where a minority of participants get most of the paid studies.

The baseline, then: $1,868 a year of sales for the average shop, a fee stack of an eighth to a third of each sale depending on ads, and a market that shrank slightly last year while the platform’s cut grew. A seller beating those numbers is doing well. A seller below them is normal, and the question worth asking is not whether the shop is failing but whether the hours would earn more elsewhere, which is what our guide to side hustles that pay daily is for.

Methodology

This analysis uses Etsy, Inc.’s Annual Report on Form 10-K for fiscal 2025, filed with the SEC in February 2026 and read directly from the filing, for all seller, buyer, sales, revenue and take-rate figures; per-seller and per-buyer averages were calculated by dividing Etsy marketplace gross merchandise sales by active sellers or buyers as of 31 December 2025, and the habitual-buyer spend by combining the report’s 7% and 40% shares, so they are means and overstate what a typical shop sells. Fee figures are the published US rates in Etsy’s Fees & Payments Policy (last updated 5 October 2026) and its payment-processing help page, read in a browser because the help center blocks automated checks; worked examples are calculated from those rates and exclude Etsy Ads spend, set-up, currency and regulatory operating fees. Reddit seller reports are cited as illustrations of the range, not as statistics. The SEC and Etsy help hosts block automated verification, so every figure from them was confirmed by reading the source on the research date.

  • Limitations: Etsy publishes totals, not a distribution, so per-seller and per-buyer figures are means calculated from its 2025 Form 10-K (marketplace GMS divided by active sellers or buyers) and overstate what a typical shop sells; the median is not published. Active sellers are those with at least one charge in the prior 12 months, so the count includes shops with a single sale. Fee examples are calculated from the published US rates and exclude set-up fees, currency conversion, regulatory operating fees in some countries, and Etsy Ads spend. All figures are for Etsy, Inc.'s fiscal 2025 unless stated.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many sales does the average Etsy shop make?

Etsy does not publish sales per shop, but its 2025 annual report allows an average: $10.46 billion of marketplace sales across 5.6 million active sellers is $1,868 per seller a year, about $156 a month before fees. That is a mean pulled up by large shops; a typical new shop sells far less. (Etsy, Inc. Form 10-K for 2025, 2025)

How many active sellers does Etsy have in 2026?

The Etsy marketplace had 5.6 million active sellers and 86.5 million active buyers at the end of 2025, per its annual report, which is about 15 buyers for every seller. Including Depop and Reverb, the company counts 8.76 million active sellers, up 7.7%, with the growth coming from Depop. (Etsy, Inc. Form 10-K for 2025, 2025)

What are Etsy's seller fees in 2026?

A $0.20 listing fee per item, a 6.5% transaction fee on the price plus shipping and gift wrap, and for US sellers a 3% plus $0.25 payment processing fee. Offsite Ads add 15% on attributed orders, or 12% once a shop has sold $10,000 in the prior year, capped at $100 per order. (Etsy Fees & Payments Policy, 2026)

How much does Etsy take from a sale?

On a $25 item with $5 shipping, Etsy's standard fees come to $3.30, or 13.2% of the item price. If the order came through an Offsite Ad at 15%, the fees rise to $7.80, or 31.2%. On a $5 digital download the fixed fees push the total to $0.93, or 18.5%. (Etsy Fees & Payments Policy, 2026)

Is Etsy growing or shrinking?

Etsy marketplace sales fell 4% in 2025 to $10.5 billion and active buyers slipped, while the company's revenue rose 2.7% because its take rate climbed from 22.3% to 24.2%. Growth in services revenue, mainly ads and shipping labels, outpaced the fall in marketplace fees. (Etsy, Inc. Form 10-K for 2025, 2025)

Who actually buys on Etsy?

About 17% of US adults shopped on Etsy in 2025, roughly 30% of women and 10% of men. Spending is concentrated: habitual buyers, about 7% of active buyers, accounted for 40% of sales, around $691 each a year, while the average buyer spent $121 across about three purchase days. (Etsy, Inc. Form 10-K for 2025, 2025)
